The pearl of great price

The pearl of great price, It is one of the most famous parables that has been written in the Holy Bible; In each of the Gospels the apostles did not want to forget the teachings of their Master and we can find several of them in the Bible.

Specifically, this parable of the pearl and the merchant (seller or merchant); We find it in the Gospel according to Matthew 13: 45-46. In these two verses, we find the following:

  • "Also the kingdom of heaven is similar to a merchant looking for good pearls."

  • "That, having found a precious pearl, he went and sold everything he had, and bought it.

With this parable, Jesus wanted his disciples to learn the value and importance of the Kingdom of Heaven by comparing it with the most precious pearl that that merchant could get.

The story of the parable

The story revolves around a person who was dedicated to the trade, purchase and sale of items, more specifically, pearls. Through this parable, Jesus achieved his goal and make both his disciples, as well as the other people who listened to him, understand what he wanted to teach with the pearl of great price.

We can divide this story into 4 sections, to make it easier for you to read and better assimilate; the interpretation that you can give it is also as valid as the one we are going to say at the end of this article. However, we cannot forget the true teaching that Jesus wants to teach us with her.

In search of pearls by the merchant

Pearls are one of the most precious and precious stones that exist in the world; As notes, even at the time of Jesus, these stones were already quite valuable, so it is an excellent allegory to the Kingdom of Heaven.

The merchant in question was always looking for the best pearls he could; since, he did not refrain from acquiring the first thing he saw. His great effort to always want to find the best of the best in his products (pearls); it would soon have its reward.

The merchant finally finds the right pearl

After a long time and a long journey, searching and acquiring the best pearls; the merchant, manages to find a stone of these without equal. This does not mean that the merchant's journey has ended, because now he must have acquired it in some possible way; he, for his part, was willing to give anything to acquire this pearl, since it was one of a kind.

Even when it seems that we achieve what we wanted so much, it is necessary to continue striving for it.

A great exchange for the pearl of great price

When being able to find the most precious pearl that the merchant has ever obtained, the merchant realizes that, to acquire it, he will have to pay a very high price; even one that exceeds your entire budget.

Despite this, the merchant did not want to miss this opportunity (besides it could be unrepeatable); So, one of the ways that he came up with to be able to acquire that pearl was to sell everything he owned. Although it seemed a rather risky bet, he already had total determination with what he wanted and knew, that acquiring that pearl, he could not get it anywhere else, and never again in his life.

The merchant manages to acquire the pearl of great price

Once decided, he gives absolutely everything he has in exchange for receiving the pearl in his hands; an object that, despite the fact that it made this man give everything he had; soon, it would bring you many more benefits and rewards than before. It can be assumed then, that the merchant did not really lose, but gained much more than he had given in return.

Interpretations of the parable

From this so beautiful parable, we can then get different interpretations with multiple teachings, even you can get yours. These teachings can be:

  1. The way of Jesus, his way of life, his teachings, his gospel; it is something truly incalculable and invaluable, that perhaps it is possible to achieve only once in a lifetime. The Kingdom of Heaven, which would be the pearl, for us to access it, requires a great price; It will be up to us whether or not we decide to give something of great value as well.
  2. In order to receive something in return, it is necessary that we also give something in return and of the same value, of what we want to acquire; We cannot ask for something if we are not willing to do our best as well. However, despite this, we must act and give without expecting to receive something in return, because it is the right thing to do, to do from the heart.
  3. Finally, the parable also teaches us that, if we try hard to get what we want so much; Sooner or later, all our efforts and sacrifices may be rewarded. If you live a life in God, in Jesus, you will never have to sit idly by and wait for things to happen alone.

Teachings from Jesus

One of the most common (and precious) ways that Jesus used to teach certain lessons to his disciples and followers; It was through parables and stories, these stories contain within themselves an extremely enormous moral and spiritual background. Jesus used them to illustrate his teachings and although he gave explanations of it, many could be left to the free thought of each person.

These parables can be used on any occasion in daily life, be it to help or teach a person; Because, just as Jesus did with his followers, we also have the duty to teach and help others, especially those who need it most. That is the life of the good Catholic, the life of the good Christian.

As well as the pearl of great priceWe can also find parables in the Bible such as "The Good Samaritan", "The Lost Sheep", "The Sower", "The Prodigal Son" and many more; From which, we can obtain other teachings that will help us throughout our lives.

In the gospels of the Bible, there will be many more parables, some of them not well known to most people.

In the following video that we leave you below, you can find a reflection on this beautiful fable. Remember, that your interpretation is also valid and acceptable.
